Maltese Information

Maltese History

The Maltese was known in the past as belonging to the "Melita" breed, this was according to the Greek philosopher known as Theophrastus. Melita was the archaic name for Malta. The Maltese was developed in Italy. It is believed that the Maltese was first brought to England by Crusaders that were returning home.

The breed became very popular throughout and especially with the women who used to carry the breed around with them in their sleeves. Most well noted was the Roman Governor of Malta who loved his Maltese so much that he actually had a portrait made. Nowadays, the Maltese is seen as a glamorous breed that is sought-after by many.

Maltese's Appearance

The Maltese is a little companion dog with a silky white coat that hangs straight down and parted by the spine. The coat is a single coat that should remain straight with no curls about. The coat should be shiny and thick. The color is pure white and light ivory is acceptable.

The long ears and tail are all covered with hair and the eyes are dark and round. The eyes will be so dark that they almost seem to be lines with black eyeliner. The nose will be all black as well. This is what we call black points. The Maltese is a delicate animal with fine bones, yet can remain quite sturdy as well. They are considered to be quite hardy.

Maltese Temperament

The Maltese is a lively breed. Known to be devoted to its master and very loving, the Maltese is well liked. The Maltese is very eager to learn and loves to play tricks. The Maltese is known to be a good guard dog, not because of its size but because it will alarm family members if anyone suspicious comes along.

They are very graceful and are seen as the perfect companion dog. They love to sit with you on your lap and take short walks. Most owners are known to carry their Maltese. With most other small dog breeds, the Maltese may not fair well with small children. They need to be around patient humans who understand not to tease the animal. They are snappish at times and can be seen as difficult to housebreak. This is why early socialization and training is a must. The Maltese is a self-assured dog that needs lots of attention and love.

Malteses' Role

The Maltese plays the role as a companion dog. They require lots of one on one love and attention. The Maltese will make a wonderful family dog as long as the children in the household are taught how to play with and handle the breed. They enjoy playing games and are very happy go lucky. They are glamorous and tons of fun at the same time!
